Palmy Project

Aim

The Palmy Project was undertaken during my internship at Studio Yugen. I worked on this project as an assistant interior designer alongside Gina, the lead designer at Studio Yugen. The Palmy Project was a new build for a lovely family living on the Gold Coast.

Their brief: To build their dream home, a modern yet sophisticated beach house.

Modern kitchen with white cabinetry, a marble island with four wooden stools, light wood floors, a vase with flowers, and an abstract painting on the right wall.

BACK

Process

With Gina's guidance, I was in charge of design ideation and developing the initial schematic design process for the clients. This process entailed the following tasks:

Concept/Design Research

Mood Board Creations

Materials Board Development

Initial Documentation

Client Consult Meetings

Renders

Multiple images of interior architectural elements with wood finishes, including a slatted wooden wall, wooden door, white concrete steps, a wood-paneled wall with a glass door, and close-up of wooden stairs.

RESEARCH/MOOD BOARD DEVELOPMENT

A collage of five interior design rooms with modern minimalist decor. The first room has a dining table with chairs and wooden wall paneling. The second image shows a small round table with a book and decorative objects on top. The third features a white sideboard with vases and flowers. The fourth displays a living room wall with a wooden cabinet, a TV, and decorative objects. The fifth showcases a sunlit outdoor patio with white walls, a ceiling fan, patio furniture, and potted plants.
Layout and materials samples for a kitchen design, including color swatches, tile and wood textures, fabric samples, and architectural plans and renderings.
Technical drawing of a kitchen countertop with measurements, showing dimensions of 1300mm by 900mm, with a faucet, and a wooden base containing labeled drawers and cabinets.

INITIAL DOCUMENTATION

Architectural design of a modern kitchen cabinet layout including dimensions and placement for cabinets and appliances.
Kitchen island with four wooden bar stools, a vase with greenery, and upper cabinets in a modern kitchen.

Outcome

The Palmy Project holds a special place in my heart, as it marked my first true experience with a real-world design. The team strongly supported my initial concepts, laying the groundwork for the rest of the build. The project exemplified a perfect blend of modern aesthetics and functional design. Every detail, from the thoughtful spatial arrangements to the carefully selected materials, demonstrates how intentional design can transform a space. Currently under construction, Mermaid Waters by Studio Yugen will be a beautiful build once completed.
