The Renew Room
Aim
The Renew Room was a project undertaken during my third year at Griffith University. This sole project aimed to revamp an underutilised space on the Gold Coast campus and transform it into a functional, sensory-friendly environment that meets the needs of the students.
Process
As a student at the time, I was well aware of the facilities lacking on campus. However, one space in particular stood out to me: a place where students of all abilities could go to relax, unwind, and renew themselves. Hence, the concept of The Renew Room was born. Through extensive research into accessible and inclusive design, The Renew Room came to life. This process entailed the following tasks:
Demographic Research
Site Analysis
Sensory Mapping
Observations
Schematic Idea Development
Accessibility Inclusion Research
Sensory Inclusion Research
Biophilic Research
Universal Design Principles Research
Renders
Technical Documentation
SITE ANALYSIS
CONCEPT IDEATION
Outcome
The concept of The Renew Room offers students a getaway from stressful university life, striving to enhance positive mental health and well-being whilst providing an inclusive and sensory-friendly space to relax, study, and unwind. The elements within this design were meticulously chosen to be highly functional, from colour-contrasting flooring that aids visually impaired users to an adjustable-height kitchenette. The Renew Room pushes the boundaries of conventional design in a bid to create a purposeful space that reflects the unique needs of all students at Griffith University.
